Portsmouth, Virginia was founded in the early 1750s by Colonel William Crawford and served as a center for ship manufacturing. The Norfolk Naval Shipyard on the Elizabeth River has been used over the years for the rebuilding and repairing of Navy vessels, and was used by prominent military groups in both the American Revolution and Civil War. The city has many tributes to its history through the maintained sites and houses found throughout the area, including the Hill Family House and the vast group of preserved houses and city buildings in Olde Towne Portsmouth. Old Towne also stands as the city’s main attraction for visitors and residents with many major business locations, grocery stores, restaurants, and shops established there.

For boating and water sports, the town connects nautical enthusiasts to both the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean through the Intracoastal Waterway, the country’s deepest natural harbor. Acres upon acres of beautiful, outdoor landscapes of grass and rivers are open for traveling and sightseeing through the Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve. There are also centers of environmental education and extensive preservation grounds at the newly-formed Paradise Creek Nature Park.
